Etisalat, one of the two major telecoms operators of the United Arab Emirates, has deployed the Verimatrix Video Content Authority System (VCAS for IPTV) to protect content on its IPTV service.

Etisalat is currently upgrading its fixed-line network to a Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network that will connect millions of homes and businesses in the UAE by the end of this year.  The operator's IPTV service is part of its 'eLife' range of multiplay services delivered over its new FTTH network, which it is building across the city of Abu Dhabi.  By the end of this year, Etisalat predicts that "thousands" of customers will be receiving its TV service, making it the largest IPTV operation in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the broader Etisalat Entertainment Network project is creating a global syndication network for broadcasters and content owners, whereby they can publish their content once and see it delivered by a range of telecoms service providers in the Middle East, including Etisalat's own subsidiaries.

“Etisalat has had a long and successful history as a pay-TV operator," said Motaz Hashem, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Etisalat.  "Keeping up with the pace of progress, we are delighted to soon be offering our customers next-generation TV and video services on our advanced fibre-optic network. In benefit of our customers, our partnership with Verimatrix has ensured the rapid and smooth deployment of VCAS for IPTV solution."

The deployment of Verimatrix for Etisalat’s IPTV service in the UAE and the Digital Entertainment Network regionally and globally was led by regional systems integrator Al-Falak.
