US firm SeaChange International has introduced its new Nitro multi-screen user interface software, capable of providing a consistent look and feel for the navigation of linear and on-demand content across mobile, PC, tablet and TV screens.

Nitro UI home full sizeKey features include support for linear and on-demand video viewing, multi-room DVR, virtual channels, TV listings, bookmarking, search and recommendation, and the ability for a handheld device such as a smartphone to be used as a remote control.

Nitro also seeks to blur the line between the television and social media with support for "virtual parties", whereby users can experience a common VOD experience from different locations by communicating, sharing comments and inviting others to participate. A "major multiple system operator" (MSO) has been announced as the first Nitro customer, with an initial deployment planned for later this year.

At present the new Nitro software can only be used in combination with SeaChange's Adrenalin multi-screen video back office, giving operators a complete platform that encompasses every aspect of multi-screen services, from the end-user experience to content delivery, management and monetisation. However, upcoming versions are expected to be opened up to third-party back offices, giving operators the flexibility to add Nitro to any existing delivery infrastructure.

As TV operators increasingly look to multi-screen services as a way of building customer loyalty and subsuming the threat from online video, the rise of user interfaces that enable smartphones and tablets to be used as a remote control will likely become a key trend - for our recent feature exploring the rise of the smart remote control, please click here.
