Canadian telco Telus has extended its IPTV service 'Optik TV' to mobile devices, using key components from the Cisco Videoscape platform.

Customers in Alberta and British Columbia can now use their smartphone or tablet to access Optik TV, which provides more than 500 linear channels (including over 100 in high-definition) and PVR Anywhere capabilities.

For the new service, Telus has deployed Cisco's Videoscape Media Suite, a cloud-based service that offers full life-cycle content management, and Cisco Videoscape Clients, which extend the Videoscape experience to a wide variety of home and mobile devices.

Cisco's Advanced Services division was recruited to provide the design and application development expertise for delivering Optik TV to mobile devices, bringing together interdependent cloud, network and client components into a single integrated solution.

Cisco has released a video (here) discussing how its Videoscape platform powers the new Optik TV for Mobile service.

Telus added 50,000 IPTV subscribers in the third quarter of this year to reach an overall total of 453,000 customers - an increase of 70% from one year earlier.
